Standing Back  (February 5, 2010)

In a dream I had recently, our son was a child again.  He wore a cape (actually a bath towel pinned at the neck) and wielded a sword against imaginary foes.  I stood at a distance, smiling as I watched his creative imagination at work.  He was in another world, passionately absorbed in a drama of his own.
At this point in their lives, our sons are reaching for exciting possiblities, taking risks, eyeing the future.  Their dreams are unfolding in real life.  And as our sons take their steps of faith, so do my husband and I.  Our step of faith is to stand back in prayer.  We smile at the future because we know the Lord is at work.  They are taking hold.  We are letting go.  The time has come.

1 Kings 19:19, "So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him....  And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him."

This is such a tough time for parents. Knowing that the Lord is in control but hoping and praying that our children will follow His path and do His will - it's definitely tough to want to hang on (just a little) to those apron strings. Even though we know that they've been taught and brought up in the ways of the Lord, we just keep praying that they follow and remember those things that we've ingrained in their hearts and minds. Jeremiah 29:11
