A Good Knock on the Head   (February 2, 2010)

At the park yesterday morning I was entertained by a musical potpourri of sounds~ intermittent thuds, crackles, and plops, and constant rustling noises created by ice as it fell to the ground and into the pond.  The last remnants of ice gave up their grip!  In random release, ice pelted the earth.  It left beautiful mounds of crushed ice at the base of trees.  Ice dropped into the pond, sending small and large circular ripples all along the shallows.  Ice chunks, ice chips, crushed ice, shaved ice all took their turns falling in a grand curtain call.  Clear sky and warming temperatures called for this finale to the weekend's wintry appearance.  I loved watching it as well as hearing it.
When I rounded the path into a forested area, I made a conscious decision not to look up.  I don't mind running through showers of ice chips, but I don't want to get hit in the eye.  Tiny shards of falling ice at times stung my cheeks, but I kept going.  When a chunk of ice hit my unprotected head, I began to question the wisdom of what I was doing.  When another chunk of ice hit my head, ouch!  That hurt!
Why would I think I could run through falling ice and not get hit?  I took a couple of good knocks on the head and then I came to my senses.  Actually, I am a bit embarrassed by my naivete.  But at least the hits to my head made me realize the potential danger.  And then I moved to a safer path.  Alas, sometimes wisdom comes with experience.  And sometimes a good knock on the head may be just what I need!

Proverbs 3:13, "Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding."
